The agricultural expansion of traditional crops through monocultures are causing unsustainable
practices, deteriorating the quality of soils and reducing crop yields. This research carried out a
sustainability analysis on the Canna edulis Ker (Achira) species as a production alternative in marginal
coffee areas, using the Municipality of Garzón - Huila as a case study. It developed A
semi-quantitative survey, and it applied to the different actors of the achira production chain to
evaluate aspects of the production system. It found a use of the Canna edulis ker species in large
part of the identified lands and that the purple variety (93.3%) is the most cultivated. Those who sow
in marginal areas and carry out organic fertilization (63%) obtained an average of 2898 kg per hectare.
The Canna edulis ker species has great potential in using mixed crops, especially in marginal areas,
since this species has a high potential to preserve soils, retain moisture and control weeds
