Abstract

Libraries, “those wonderful spaces where all answers are possible”, in the collective imaginary are nothing
more than those places where books are kept indefinitely waiting for a reader. On the other hand,
due to the new information and communication technologies, which have accentuated the phenomenon
of the dematerialization of the text, it seems that a study on the function of libraries, the occupation of
the librarian and their future prospects was a matter anachronistic.

In a world where individuals remain connected to their mobile devices and immersed in new forms of
socialization, you might think that the destiny of the libraries as institutions and of librarians as professionals
is extinction. At this juncture, the closure of libraries due to the global health emergency seems
to reinforce this thinking. However, in my opinion, this is an intellectual levity that must be remedied
by the building knowledge around the occupation, in general, and the prospects of the technologist in
library management in particular. This to glimpse how the profession could adapt to the outlook of uncertainty
that we live nowadays, and how to apply both its technical and socio-emotional skills for the
attention of users.
