El transporte marítimo de mercancías enfrenta problemas significativos de ineficiencia y desperdicio debido al envejecimiento de su infraestructura tecnológica y de procesos comerciales que carecen de intercambio de información en tiempo real y de colaboración efectiva. Blockchain disrumpe el transporte marítimo internacional de mercancías ya que tiene el potencial de redefinir la forma en que se intercambia la información digital entre las partes interesadas, gracias a la inmutabilidad que está ausente en otros sistemas de tecnologías de la información. La tecnología blockchain tiene la capacidad de rastrear una amplia gama de socios logísticos globales, como son los remitentes, transitarios, transportistas, corporaciones de puertos marítimos, operadores de terminales y oficinas de aduanas, lo que permite hacer a las mercancías seguimiento y trazabilidad mucho más a fondo y, al mismo tiempo, brinda acceso abierto a la información relacionada con plazos de entrega; redefine los documentos tradicionales en papel, que consumen mucho tiempo e intensas relaciones de confianza dentro de la logística marítima. Esto hace el transporte marítimo global de mercancías sea más eficiente y productivo. Blockchain actualmente es el principal factor disruptivo en el transporte global de mercancías desde la invención del contenedor marítimo.
